What is Rheumatoid?
Rheumatoid Arthritis is one of the common rheumatic diseases and the others being Osteoarthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematrosus ,Gout and PseudogoutArthritis is a general term for inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a progressive inflammatory disease that causes damage to joint tissues and other parts of the body, causing pain, disability and deformity. X-rays are needed to identify evidence of joint damage. Prompt  early diagnosis and proper treatment are keys to preventing permanent joint damage from RA.

Who gets RA?
The main cause of RA is unknown. The Bermuda triangle of genetics, environment and autoimmunity is involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. Most significant risk factors are variations in human leukocyte antigen genes especially the HLA –DRB1 gene. However, study shows a slight tendency for the disease to be worse in cold, damp climates such as in Europe compared to the warmer countries such as Malaysia. The local experience has been that the disease is more likely to be milder and less likely to affect other parts of the body apart from the joints.

In Malaysia, RA affects about 5 in 1000 people. It can start at any age from childhood to those in the nineties. The most common age for the disease to start is between 30 to 50 and women are more commonly affected than men.
